Another poster recently mentioned a spring in the rear brake that (I think) was supposed to be near the outside pad (i.e., the one that contacts the outward facing surface of the rotor) rather than the inside pad. He claimed that the factory had mis-installed some of these springs near the "inside" pad and that was leading to excessive brake wear. That might explain why some folks rear brakes pads wear out at 20k miles while others last much longer. As also mentioned sticking calipers is another likely explanation for the wide variability in brake pad wear (not to mention driving habits).
I currently have 30k mostly hwy miles and about 4mm of rear pad left on each pad. At this rate they might go another 10k (hard to tell since I don't know how much pad I started with). I also don't have much of a dust problem but I also rinse the wheels w/ water about once a week and that keeps them fairly clean (stock wheels are painted so dust rinses right off). Good luck.
