Why won't my remotes work?

Ahhh yes, I'm blessed with an '04 Linear that won't let me in... It only does this sometimes. Seems as the remotes are dead. I had the remotes replaced 2 years ago under warranty (there was nothing wrong with the originals) and just replaced the batteries. I still get casual performance form my remotes. The best part is when it won't unlock and I have set the alarm off to open it. My helpful dealer said to disconnect the battery... I love this one, anyway that works for a day and then it goes back to malfunctioning. So what "quirk" is this and can anyone speculate on what it costs to fix? Another fun thing it just started doing is not unlocking the ignition and steering wheel when the key is inserted. Can't wait to get stranded! Glad I'm an AAA Platinum member.
Something's gotta be said for the build quality of these cars. My '04 had been dealer serviced, garaged and never abused, yet when compared to my '00 C Class with more than twice the mileage, the C Class seems new. Never has the "smart key" in my M-B given me any problems like this.
