It's all about how you use the rack. I drive to local mountain bike trails. The bikes are rarely in the rack unattended...if so it's typically 5 minutes to go to the bathroom before riding. My bike carriers as well as my ski carriers lock. If someone *really* wants to steal stuff from the rack, they're going to no matter what you do. A pry bar is all it would take to get through the bike or the ski carrier's locks. So, again it's all about how you use it.
I was disappointed there was no way to lock the rack to the roof, but like I said, I'm not going shopping at the mall and leaving my $3,000 bike in the rack, no matter if the rack locks to the roof or not.
