The problem rectified itself after the car sat 'off' for an hour or so. It hasn't happened since then.

I inquired about this at my next service visit and the tech said that many of the computers (something like 15 in the car) go into a 'sleep' mode after a while. Once you start the car they are supposed to wake but sometimes they don't. He said that usually the fix themselves after sitting a while (everything goes back asleep) as was the case with my car. You could try to disconnect the battery for a while to see if this expedites the reset.

Hopefully when you go back to you car this evening after work, it will be back to normal. Of course it could be that the entire stereo (or any one of the stereo components) could have failed. In other words it could be a hardware issue. If so, it would probably be easy to find, but expensive to fix. Let us know how it turns out.
