When I worked in the auto industry, we looked for soft touch plastics as desirable whereas hard, shiny plastics are generally undesirable. But, I agree that the Saab plastics aren't nearly as bad as the press makes them out to be, and the Japanese are starting to use more and more hard plastics to save money. Usually, it's below the sight-line of the interior, but I haven't checked out the latest Accord yet.
Here's the clincher, when you work at a company run by bean-counters, you can't make a business case for richer looking plastics. It's subtle, psychological impact, but you can't prove on paper that it leads to more sales, even though it does matter.
