The rear pads on my 2006 9-3 SC 2.0T lasted only 23,000 miles. It seems to be "normal" for certain model years (maybe 2005-2007) on the 2.0's only. It would appear that they went to ceramic pads in the front only for those years, as indicated by the lack of both dust and wear on my front pads; they still look like new after 41,000 miles and I would expect to get over 100,000 miles out of the fronts based on their condition. What I did for a cheap fix back at 23,000 miles on the rears was to just change the pads, as the rotors still measured well within tolerance. I went with EBC Greenstuffs for a total of $59 and replaced them myself. It only takes about 15 minutes per side providing you buy or rent the correct tool to screw in the piston. Anyways, I wasn't too disappointed with the short pad life as it was such a cheap and easy fix. BTW, the EBC Greenstuffs seem just like the original pads, in that they wear fast and create lots of dust, but I didn't want to go to ceramics in the rear with used rotors nor did I want to replace the rotors at 23,000 miles. When these pads do wear out, which will probably be in within the next 5,000 miles or so, I'll spring for new OEM rotors (I think they're about $60-70/pc online) and Akebono ceramic pads. Hopefully that will increase the rear pad life and cut down on the black brake dust that I'm tired of washing off constantly.
