rural ownership: mechanic's opinions? Anders?

My parents are considering upgrading their 1989 900s to a 9-3ss. They live in a rural area with an excellent independent mechanic who does not specialize in Saabs (nobody does). In fact, their 1989 + my 1993 are possibly the only Saabs he's ever worked on. Their '89 has been trouble free, but is finally starting to rust.
Question for mechanics on the board: the 9-3ss is a newer car with a lot more electronics in it - does it really take a shop full of technology to work on a 9-3ss, or will a more basic shop with good meticulous staff be ok with it? I'd think lots of stuff is common with modern GM vehicles so I think they'd be fine, but I'd be interested in your opinions!
They don't want a car they have to take in to the city to the dealer for service. Would they be better off with a 9-5?
