I love my 2005 Aero CVT. I like having the 2.0T 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine. The Saab engine is derived from the GM ECOTEC engine which has very good reliability, and if you really want more power the engine can easily be chipped to produce 250+ HP. The 2.0T gives great gas mileage as well. The 5-speed transmission is plenty rugged and coupled to the turbo engine, I really can not see any need for a 6-speed. There does not seem to be any place that the engine feels it is 'between gears'.
I beleieve that the V6 and 6-speed are fine, but that hey are more a marketing response to the competition, rather than any true performance improvement. The V6 does gives more low engine torque, but with a large reduction in gas mileage.
