Mark,
I have been following this thread for some time w/ interest and the following reasons for fast rear brake wear have been discussed:
--traction control uses rear brakes so if you drive like a maniac it will contribute to rear brake wear (from TCM and just lots of hard braking)
--some brake pads can be installed incorrectly w/ spring on wrong side
--people who drive in a..er..stupid...manner (gas, brake, gas, brake, gas etc)can facilitate pad wear
--maladjustment of the emergency brake can cause pads to rub and wear (insides first)
--sticking caliper from infrequent use (and/or perhaps a car that sat on the lot for a year before it was purchased)
--no downshifting
--I would also add the following...a dlr that says you need brakes when you really don't (its worth visually confirming)
I appear to NOT have any of the aforementioned afflictions as my pads are doing fine at 41k miles (admittedly mostly hwy miles)
