Dealer says transmission will be new and quoted a reasonable price for a new unit (even though I feel very strongly it should be replaced under warranty given the rate of failure on those model years).
Indy suggests that dealer can't get new unit, but will install a remanufactured / refurbed unit.
I didn't purchase the car new, but have taken it to the same dealer for service (other than a couple of oil changes that I performed myself).
GM/Saab rejected any after warranty assistance on the basis that there weren't sufficient service records. But, the dealer was able to access sufficient service records on the car to deny me the service coupon on the 30k mile interval service because it was redeemed by the original owner at the 15k mile interval service. The car is/was in immaculate condition and has obviously been pampered by both owners (original and myself).
I just think this explains to a large degree why GM is in bankruptcy (even after receiving bailout money from the Fed). The new GM cars are kind of hideous if you ask me. I think they will be out of business completely in the next 5 - 10 years.
It's a sad state of affairs for what was once the corporate admiration of the entire industrialized world...
