Brake rotor anomality Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 09:53:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had a new customer come in with a chirping noise from front brakes that got quite as soon as you touched the brake pedal.
Noticed right away that both hold down springs were missing on calipers and I installed those but the chirping got worse together with a growling noise when coming to a stop.
Removed calipers and noticed a shiny surface on the brake rotor and some rubbing marks on the inside of caliper.
Customer had had the brakes done at a Firestone station less than a year ago.
Found out that the rotors were 3 mm too big in diameter even though the rest of the rotor and bolt pattern fit and that the inner pad had been installed on wrong side so that the arrow pointed up instead of down and Dan Block pads had been used.
Customer wanted to save money so I machined off 3 mm on the diameter and installed the pads correctly and it seemed to work.
I wonder if the rotors might have been for a Saturn or any other GM car using a slightly bigger rotor but the same bolt pattern and I wonder if they left the springs off by choice due to that it was making too much noise when they were installed?
At least the brake job was "cheap" at Firestone, sigh.
