I haven't done this on a 9-3SS but have replaced the trunk struts on a number of other cars.
The ball end of the struts typically have a C-shaped spring clip that surrounds 270-degrees of the ball. Using a screwdriver to partially remove this from the ball end will allow the ball to easily slide off its mounting post. Inspect the new struts prior to installation and you will see the spring clip.
Just as you surmised, the new struts are practically a "push-on" for installation.
