Gas Gage/Gear shifting?

I have a 2004 9-3 and just today, I went to fill my gas tank. As I was driving away, I tried to manually down shift (it's normally an automatic) just because I know it helps save my breaks. I did this and came to a stop and shifted back into drive. Then, as I was driving away and coming to another stop, (without manually shifting this time), my gas gauge, which was a second ago at full, suddenly went all the way down to empty and my gas light came on. Confused, I pulled into a parking lot, turned off the car, turned it back on, and the gas gage was normal again! I started to drive, everything fine as I was uping my speed, but then again, as I was coming to a stop, the gage went back down again. Can anyone help me with why this is happening? I tried looking at the gas cap to see if it was loose, and I've turned my car on and off several times but nothing is working. Please help!
