I have an '08 2.0T Combi, also 6spd but Polar White on Parchment - sort of ying to your dark yang! Also bought in Boston, but I am a whole lot closer than you are...
I did an oil change myself at 5K, but otherwise I think as long as you use the specified Mobil 1 0w40 oil it is perfectly safe to follow the oil life monitor. So far mine has been calling for changes right around 9500 miles. I use the car mostly for long highway trips, so it stands to reason I am getting close to the 10K limit on them. 27K on the car so far and very happy with it.
I think they cars have been in production long enough that they don't have any major issues. Just the usual random things here and there. And the '08s and up seem to have many fewer squeaks and rattles.
