YES very DIY - rotors and pads on an '06 are very easy to do. you'll save hundreds doing it your self and can be done in under an hour if you are familiar with changing pads and rotors.
I recently did mine and used akebono ceramic euro pads. They are outstanding and better than anything the dealer will put on. Available at tire rack, state of 9 and others. Rotors are simple also and as you noted you are not sure how many sets are on the current rotors go ahead and change them. I changed mine at 61,000 after two sets of pads. I went with centric rotors and have been very pleased.
Do a quick search and you'll find listings of tools required, specs to follow and recommendations for rotor and pad types. using the combo I mentioned you will not be disappointed with the results.
other option is find a good indi mecahnic, you'll get the right parts cause you can spec them and save a little in labor over the dealer.
