I can't comment on the XWD. However, if the concern is snow & ice, there are typically two winter 'problems' 1) plowing thru a thick snow or going up inclines, and 2) stopping/controlling the car while driving.

There have been a number of articles in Car & Driver (I think) where they compared the handling of the AWD & 2WD versions of the same car, but put snow tires on the 2wd. The advantages of the AWD are obvious, but its potential disadvantage is its additional weight compared to its 2WD sibling - which on its own would negatively impact handling.

Their conclusions are that if your concern is stopping & handling, the 2wd with snow tires worked better than the same car with AWD. On the other hand, if you have to deal with deep snow, or often drive uphill, the AWD is the better choice.

For me, my big fear is stopping and not sliding. I put snow's on all my cars, on their own rims, and swap them in the spring. I've had a 6cyl 9-5, now have a 4 cyl 9-3 Aero convertible. The Aero is very capable in the winter with the snows. (The 9-5, though, was incredible!).

So, personally, I'd get the CPO, & buy set of boots! also will get better MPG, I assume. But, like I said, if you often need to go off-road, up hill, etc... the AWD is the right answer.
