Given equivalent tires, the 9-3 is FAR better in the snow than at least the early 9-5 that I had. The 9-3s traction control system is a lot more advanced, and the early 9-5 did not even have stability control. The sound of brakes "grinding" is perfectly normal, braking individual wheels is an integral part of how the system works.
The stability control system is amazing - I highly recommend finding an open icy parking lot and experimenting with sliding the car around with it turned on and off. You will be astounded at the difference it makes.
I don't know if the later 9-5 ever got the updated system, my 9-5 was a 2000 and only had TCS.
