Just one point of reference on a similar decision.
Back in 2005, someone rear-ended my 2000 9-3 hatchback as I was waiting to exit a shopping center. The nose of her Lexus coupe went under my bumper, hit the tow loop, popped up and ripped off the bumper, in the process bending both rear quarter panels, the rear panel below the hatch, popping the hatch and bending it. Even though there was no main structural damage to the frame to speak of and the car was not out of alignment (I actually drove it home), her insurance wanted to total it because of the amount of damage (estimated at around $8500 to repair). I was just sick because the car was paid for and I could not touch another 5 year old 9-3 for what they wanted to pay me to total it.
So, after talking to a friend who directed me to a small body shop where the guy did good work but had low overhead (and getting an estimate), I took her insurance pay out, bought back the totaled car and cleared enough to pay for the repairs and the rental car while it was being repaired. I am still driving that 9-3 today with a 170,000+ miles.
This made sense for me because I understood the damage and knew it was all just sheet metal on the rear of the car and did not impact the safety or integrity of the car. Sure, I have a "salvage" title and it is not worth much if I try and sell it, but at 11 years old, it would not have had much more value now anyway....and I have had a chance to enjoy it for another 6+ years.
You will have to make a decision based on the damage and what they are willing to pay...
