What years?
If Chadwick's right about the zinc being sacrificial, that's commonly used on boats where stray electrical current (shore power cable, dropped in the harbor, generally poor electrical) is a major problem, and galvanic corrosion (dissimilar metals in an electrolyte make a "battery") it would be logical. On these modern cars here are a lot of electrical things interconnected and especially where road salt is used you have added issues. Insulating the spring (plastic seat) might be worse than letting the current flow where you want it instead of creating pits where you don't. By the way, old Austin Healey 3000s (steel fenders bolted to aluminum body cowl) had huge galvanic corrosion problems.
