Brake rotor size Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 06:57:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had quite a bit of trouble trying to figure out the front brake rotor size on my 2005 Linear. Most places list both 302mm and 292mm size rotors on that year. I checked the build plate on the door jamb for the brake codes (AA, AC, etc) that SaabDoc listed, and apparently only later years have those codes. With the wheel off, I used a tape measure as best I could and came up with 292mm. When I went to replace the brakes, the rotors were the wrong size of course, and I had to put the brakes back together and wait for new rotors to arrive in the mail.
After studying the catalogs, I realized that the way to figure out the size of the front brakes was to look at the rear brakes. If the rear brakes are vented, then they are 292mm, and they are paired with the 302mm front brakes. You can tell if the rears are vented without even taking off the rear wheel by looking through the wheel slots. If the rear rotors are solid (not vented), then they are 278mm. The solid rotors are usually paired with the 292mm front brakes.
I realize that there may be a few odd-ball configurations, like big fronts with solid rears, but I think those are rare. I don't think the vented rear rotors would ever be paired with smaller front brakes. The system sould be seriously out of ballance.
I guess the good news is that my 175hp Linear has the big brakes, like the Arc and Aero of that year.
