It would seem possible to have a custom adapter fabricated that would lift the bike rack rather than push it out from the car. Effectively a horizantal piece of 2-inch square tubing welded to the top of a horizontal piece of 1-1/4 inch square bar, with cross holes for locking/retaining pins. Some spacer would be required between the two to allow clearance for the 1-1/4 inch receiver body.
Design it, patent it, and sell them!
