Er, since you are coming from the C900 board, I can only conclude that you
a) tend to purchase a mature vehicle and then keep it like forever, and
2) either work it on yourself or have a trusted and moderately priced independent mechanic (or both).
Be assured that by cramming the V-6 into the limited space available, service can be a nightmare. Little things like spark plugs present a major challenge. That said, major work would generally require dropping the engine with either model - so that's a draw. Much of what you perceive as the difference between the two models - 17" wheels, higher grade audio - were available on the 2.0T and you may or may not find one that has them. People complain a lot about the higher grade audio anyway, so that may not be a real issue. And as you say, 17" wheels are easy to find. I have them on my 2.0T CV, and find that chassis is well suited to them. The exhaust is single from the turbocharger back past the middle muffler, then it splits for the paired rear mufflers on the V-6. The 9-3X, using the same 2.0T, has a similar exhaust set up. There were 2.0T models using a sport exhaust that protruded through the rear valence (but on just one side), and there are trim pieces you can buy to finish off the rear valence if you "upgrade" to such a device. The standard exhaust has a short right angle bend at the end of the muffler to direct the exhaust below the valence. IMO it works and sounds fine.
I had a 9-3X loaner - one with the 6 speed a/t as used in the '06 Aero, and must say that it is a better transmission than the 5 speed a/t (as I have on my 02 9-5). Just as a point of reference, the '12 Griffen Combi will have the 6-speed automatic transmission along with the direct fuel injected version of the 2.0T, for even better economy and performance.
