wiper blade replacement with airfoil

I know this topic has been covered before. I while back, I had my wiper blades replaced by the dealer while the car was being serviced ('06 9-3 Aero). Over time, I've noticed that they aren't working well, with the blades seeming to collapse sideways when they reverse at each limit of travel, and then dragging -- which also seems to upset the variable speed of the rain-sensing control.
So, as I am about to buy a set and replace them on my own, I notice that the airfoil appears to be attached to the wiper assembly. I think part of the problem is that the spring tension has deteriorated, so I want to replace the whole assembly.
Is everyone else just dispensing with the airfoil, or did I miss something? I vaguely remember this being addressed awhile back, so apologize for the re-hash. I'd kind of like to keep the airfoil, although I suspect that I'd see little difference.
Thanks,
SEN
