2003 9-3 arc starter circuitry/system question

Is the large wire attached to the starter solenoid (theoretically originating from battery)always energized with 12 volts or is it only energized during starting sequence? Addiionally, when the key is turned to start, does that then energize the small wire on the solenoid, therefore activating the solenoid, throwing out the bendix and turning the starter motor?
This is how my simple mind thinks it should work but simple minds don't ususlly engineer these systems. I'm trying to understand the system so i can then more accurately troubleshoot it.
Thanks in advance.
