Just from reading a bit on this board, as I am also considering going for a newer 9-3, it sounds like the first found of the 9-3ss (2003-2005) are better to avoid. Instead go with a newer model. More glitches figured out.
In regards to the Audi, I looked at those too. Aparently anything before 2004 was known for a lot of electrical issues. Also, there is a costly timing belt change that is required around 100k miles. Upwards of $2k.
Some great deals to be had on new saabs right now!
