Lifter follow up

I recently inquired as to the ticking sound on the warm engine idle. I recently went by the dealer to get my scheduled oil and 100k manual tammy fluid change. While I was chatting with the mechanic he actually said the tammy oil was 'pristine' with a very minimal amount of metal shavings on the magnetic plug, but I still think 100k is a good interval.
I asked about the lifter replacement and he said it is a tough job to get into. Something about pulling the cam and maybe even removing the head, which would then require some sanding to smoothe it out before installing new hg so I figure that would be a large bit of work. That being said, an invasive procedure like that would be harmful I think so I'm going to let the ticking go, say a prayer, and see how long she will go. But, for future reference, what are the signs of lifter failure? Will I see smoke, misfiring, or rough idle? She runs fine and doesn't tick in higher rpms, but I'd like to know what to look for. I'm taking another cross country trip in December and i'd rather have a heads up before something goes wrong. Thanks.
