We have an '06 9-3 but I hang out on other boards here more than this one.

The '03 models had a couple issues when first introduced. One was an electrical issue and the other was programming of the automatic transmision. Both were successfully addressed via TSBs issued to the Dealerships, and the changes were incorporated in the 2004 and later cars during assembly.

Since this car is 10 years old you can assume the electrical issue ahs been corrected by a previous owner by now. Running a VIN check with a former Saab Dealer may be able to verify it.

I *believe* the '03 was the only year to use Supplemental Air Injection to meet emissions requirements. This system has the same issues as all other cars with SAI, namely pumps failing with age.

Steering Column Lock. These cars have a solenoid which disengages a pawl from a locking collar in the steering column. The openings in the collar for the pawl were too narrow on the early cars resulting in steering wheels which would not unlock properly. This was fixed later but our '06 still has it happen rarely. The quick solution that works for my wife and I is to heave the wheel strongly to one side, then the other if necessary, during the starting proceedure if the wheel does not unlock by itself. This has always allowed the pawl to slide out after the locking collar is turned just a little. Reported to be a bigger problem on the earlier cars.

Other than these minor items the cars have proven to be rock solid. Lots of the posts here are old because these cars have so few problems. Even being Saab's all time biggest seller hasn't resulted in many 9-3SS owner maintenance issues being raised here.
