Ok, I have the answer now.

The motor that is located under the front of the seat acts on the back.

But it was not faulty at all, nor the gearbox. This motor/gearbox assembly acts on a long screw. This screw is threaded into a tube, and the lenghtening of that tube lowers the rear of the seat via a lever. The problem was the screw/tube. It was stuck at the end of the stroke, as if the internal stopper that prevent the screw to come out was firmly stuck inside. A quick help with a pair of pliers with the motor connected to a 12V battery had it restarted. I lubed it to prevent another episode. We'll see if it lasts.

BTW, removing the seat from the car is very easy : a 12-point 7/16 or 11 mm socket, and a T50 Torx bit is all you need. The floor bolts are locktited, so be prepare to work them with a good T50 socket.

The seats are quite heavy, so help from a friend could be a good idea to ease them out of the car.

Funny story : once I did the "repair", I reinstalled the seat in the car and tested it. It worked fine, until I dropped the rear of the cushion. It stopped right where it was stuck before. Great!, I thought... I must now find a new motor/gearbox assembly, or worse, a seat frame since the screw/tube assembly is part of the frame ! I was a bit discouraged, until I tried to tilt back the seatback in the normal position. No movement there too... Oh oh, must be something very wrong. Or could it be simpler ?... Yeah, it was simply the normal shut down of the electrical accessories after a period of time. What a relief ! Everything works OK now.
