A few TPMS observations... Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Sun, 7 Apr 2013 18:28:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When I tested before the sale this 9-3 SC Aero XWD last February, the TPMS light was on stating 2 tires were low. Since Honey was bringing back the car here from Quebec to Montreal, I've asked the previous owner to "check the tires and fill them before she attacks the 250 km ride back home". He said he will.
When the car arrived at our home, the light was still on. It took me 2 minutes to adjust the pressures to the proper 35 psi - a front tire was at 50 psi- and after two corners, it was out. No other TPMS warning from that moment.
Fast forward to yesterday. I installed some 50th anniversary wheels that I bought used. The seller had an 2008 Aero FWD, but it was totaled last fall. He was selling the summer wheels, complete with tires and TPMS. So yesterday I mounted them on the car. I was expecting a bit of TPMS warning, the time the system will be in "learning" mode. To my surprise, nothing at all. I started the car, drove it, nothing. The TPMS light never lit.
So i'm wondering : is this normal ? After all the horror stories I've heard/read, I'm surprised there was no hiccups.
BTW, the switch from the Gislaved winters (on stock OEM 17" wheels) to these Hankook Ventus V12 summer tires is drastic. Now, the car is following any rut in the road, it's almost too fast-acting for me. I now know that the next set of summer tires will be a lot more mainstream and less sporty. The ContiProContact on the old 9-5 were about perfect for us. The stock MXM4 (that came with the car, dismounted) do look a lot more comfortable to my eye now...
Final observation : this Aero is very short-legged. I've almost never sensed the ABS braking over bumps with the old 9-5. Very supple suspension with good damping. In this 9-3, it's now the 3rd time I brake over bumps (roads are awful in Montreal) and that I feel the ABS clicking. Either the sensivity is up or the springs are too rigid. Either way, the car is here to stay as Honey is absolutely in love with it. She loves the power, the grip, the black on black allure. For her, it's like a classier GTI.
BTW, my wife's initials are AAB. No wonder her car is a SAAB...
