Don't know the overall life of cv with good boot. Once the boot rips you probably only have days though. I figure you would toss in a new axel and cv if you are changing the boot because you have to pull all that stuff out anyhow. I've changed a cv boot on 4 wheeler without pulling the axel by boiling it in water and expanding it over the knob before the spindle, probably not the best way to treat a car. If the axel has to be pulled to change boot, change it all. If not, just change the boot is my take.
