After playing around with a junk engine on the floor and figuring out what's going on when the tools is installed and the short comings of the genuine Saab tool, I manufactured a spacer out of an pulley from a water pump and tack welded it on the special tool.
This allows the sprocket to be solid fixed to the tool while the water pump is out.
With the regular configuration, it s was too much slop in the tool while the sprocket was attached and if the tool tilted slightly inwards, it loosened the chain and the tensioner was allowed to tick one tooth out.
Pretty bad design to begin of the tool with but we see that all the time with cars where the white coat labrats are disconnected with the real world and rely solely on what the computer screen tells them.
It is a little bit tighter to snake the tool in due to the extra thickness but it works well.
