The 9-3X is pretty much the same 9-3 sports sedan that was made by saab from 2003-2011 (with some changes over the years). Its has the haldex XWD which is among the best AWD systems out there. You say base, so I assume you're looking at the 4 cylinder 2.0 turbo. Thats the engine in my 2004 9-3 SS and its running strong at 130K miles. My Saab independent mechanic says this is one of the best engines he has seen in a Saab, and generally one of the best period. Some of the 6cyls have coil problems. Its fuel efficient, yet still powerful and fun to drive. Theyre good long lasting engines

These 9-3's were considered to have some minor electronic bugs in the early years but it was all definately worked out by 2007. They made a decent amount of them, and Saab Parts USA is continuing to supply parts for at least the next 4 years. Even during bankruptcy times when the company was down, I didnt have any problems getting parts for it.

Ever since Saab went down, so did the blue book values on these 9-3's especially. Makes it a better deal in terms of buying one, but that also means if you get into any sort of accident, it would probably total fairly easily.

I highly recommend that car but also look into the swedish cousin Volvo. Theyve been making solid 2.5 5 cylinder turbo's since the early 90's (and still do), and theyre awesome. A comparable small wagon would be the V50 T5 AWD. Nice reliable car, good size, really powerful with the turbo in mountains. The S60 AWD sedan is also awesome. They new S60's are top notch, and beat out a lot of the other luxury sports sedans such as Audi and Mercedes. Subaru's have become way too mainstream and cheap. Might as well look into a Toyota Matrix AWD then.

Good luck!
