Not that it's that important, but I'm an auto journalist. I have a new car each week. And I monitor fuel mileage on all of them. What I'v learned so far :
- No standard engine will be harmed by using regular gas. All recent engines do have a knock sensor and will adapt the ignition curve according to actual gas.
- But fuel mileage will be worst a bit with regular, if the manufacturer recommends Premium. The cost difference is reduced a bit by that worst mileage. I've noticed that effect on all my cars, all turbo, but not on the press cars since I don't drive them long enough.
- Usually, if the previous tester filled the car with regular (while premium was recommended) and I have to fill it with premium during the week, I can feel the difference. Engine is a bit livelier, acceleration are a tiny bit faster. It's especially noticeable on small turbo engines, obviously. More, since we drive turbo Saabs and Audi since a dozen years, I can tell when Honey fill her car with regular. My seat-of-the-pants dyno is very sensitive... and I've never been wrong.
- I, for one, always fill the press cars, and mines, with the grade of fuel I find on the label in the gas filler door.
So, before concluding that regular is cheaper, you might want to do a couple fills with premium and monitor range, then switch grade and monitor again. You might be surprised...
