It could be a case of bad valves or loose valve seats which can be tricky to pinpoint with 100% certainty and also with the huge amount of repair cost, the shop would have to think twice before pulling trigger on that kind of repair.
Even if under warranty, the shop has to answer to higher authority and if the guessed wrong, they might not get paid.
Compression test and leakdown test when cold might reveal something.
I haven't had to deal with engine repairs yet on the V6 but a friend of mine that did loose valve seats said that next time he will drop the whole engine out of the car and work on it on the floor instead of dealing with cylinder heads in car.
