I've had a front one that didn't vary with steering, so that's not an absolutely good test. That was an '89 900 and it sounded like a loud knobby snow tire.
It has to get REALLY BAD before it gets very hot. Unlike dragging brakes.
Have someone ride in the back seat to see whether they can tell right vs. left side. Sounds travel funny inside a car.
Noisy rear wheel bearing ('98 Accord) wasn't really certain until I removed the brake pads and spun the hub without ANYTHING attached. So if you're looking for an excuse to dismantle it... For THAT car, the bearing was the same right-to-left, so it wasn't too inconvenient to take it apart.
