When I get this question, its always answered 2007 9-3 2.0 in whatever trans and body style. The 2003-2004 are usually rough years that are cheaply sold and bought by people who don't understand or respect they were $35-40K cars new ten years ago. All 2003-2006 had a fiber optic stereo which can be problematic (especially amp1 in sedans) and expensive to fault trace and repair. Beginning in 2008 the exterior got a current day facelift front and rear that took the styling to the end in 2011. However 2008-2011 2.0L engines have a defect with the intake valves which cause the engine to loose cylinder compression resulting in rough, misfiring cold starts that smooth out as the engine warms up. R&R Cylinder head, 16 new valves, a bit of machine shop work and a headgasket seal set takes care of it. Rear main seal leaks also seem to be common for the 2008 2.0T (Done 6 now, all on 2008 MY b207) 2007 2.0T is the sweet spot where there is no fiber stereo system, updated interior dash design and no intake valve problems that I have heard of.
I wouldn't pass on the 2.8T simply because its the "performance" version. A lightly tuned 2.0T engine has the same output as the 2.8T in stock form. The 2.8 v6 is very lethargic when reving and is tuned more for torque. Personally I would stick to the 2.0T given the choice as they are much simpler to wrench on, labor ops aren't as asinine and parts are cheaper. If your friends low mileage 2006 Aero is a nice example with good maintenance history at the right price, go for it.
