Rear wheel bearing with ABS sensor (2008 XWD) Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Sat, 20 Dec 2014 07:28:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi everyone,
Well, the bad component was finally a dead rear wheel bearing and not the rear axle harness. Good news, since the harness is backordered for a few weeks. But the rear bearing is 4x more expensive (240$CND vs 60$). Part installed is an made in Germany IPD box (30-4409) with an FAG part in it. OEM part was FAG, made in Germany too. That is Saab 93175327 but is now superceded to 93186387. The kit includes the 3 E18 75mm-long bolts, the 32mm CV nut and a center dust cap.
Replacement was done by me and my best buddy in his garage. Not an easy job, but doable by DIYers provided you have all the tools : E18 and E12 sockets, a 32mm socket and numerous 1/2 to 3/8 adapters and extensions to reach the last bolt at the back of the hub.
By the way, if it is not already done, its a good time to replace the outer CV boot clip before it fails. The flat joint-less aluminum OEMs are not very long lasting and can easily be replaced with standard Oetker clips. Mine were already done last year.
Upon removal, we found the bearing was still good but rust creeped into the sensor part of the bearing/sensor assembly. By the way, it's the same bearing as the fronts, and it is different than the one for FWD cars. Obviously, the ABS sensor parts was stuck into the rusted hub, so removal is indeed a destructive process...
Now, since the other rear bearing was done under warranty last year, but both identical front bearings are still perfectly good, I can imagine the rears are not enough protected from the road spray. What is the experience of other XWD owners on that subject ? Car is only 65k miles... that's not what I expect from such a part that should last waaaayyyy longer.
Another data point : ABS/TCS light was still lit at startup, but driving the car over 10 km/h had it quit, just as WIS stated. No need for Tech2 to clear the light. However, the code is still memorized and will need a Tech2 to erase it from memory.
So ABS, TC, ESP and more important, XWD, are all functionnal now. What a relief as the fun season begins...
