The fuel pump is a tough one because they are certainly wearable items. Mine went bad at75k in my 2004 Aero without a hint of warning.
The one in my 87 900T. btw, lasted 20 years so it's no telling but if your son's welfare could be compromised in such a situation I imagine we'd all agree that changing it every 100k is a no brainer.
