I do them from below but without removing the crank pulley it is quite a challenge and you do need one of those universal belt tensioner tools that are slim enough to get up and release the tensioner.
A Saab mechanic (JustinHiFi) I talked to said he do them from above all the time and it is one crucial different all where the car is from. The plastic nuts for fender liner can be seized to the metal stud so you twist off the stud instantly when trying to remove.
I don't have that problem here.
I did one from above one time because I already had the air filter box out but unless that's the case, I don't see a time saving doing it from above with a hoist.
