What I was told by my upholstery guy Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 19 Oct 2017 14:37:45 In Reply to: seats - vinyl? also headlight function, TML [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 17 Oct 2017 07:33:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The seat bottom center portion is full leather. Although it too is subject to premature cracking.
I 'think' he told me the side bolsters are split leather. Meaning the skin is sliced or split so that it is only half thickness, then this thin layer of leather is bonded to a fabric backing. Our driver's side bolster on the seat bottom split horribly!
Seat bottom was fully re-skinned using an OEM replacement. I need to do a better job keeping it properly treated in the future to prevent it from happening again.
The upholstery guy only needed 45 minutes to remove the entire seat from our car, carry it into his shop to place it on his bench, remove the bottom cushion assembly from the seat frame, strip the old cover off the seat cushion, install the new cover on the foam cushion, re-install the bottom cushion assembly on the seat frame, steam the cover to shrink it slightly for a better fit, carry the completed seat back out to the parking spot, and remount the seat in our car. Knowing how to do this work saves a LOT of time! Or a lot of customer's money for labor.
