The car went back to the mechanic. While the car ran fairly well on the drive to the shop, conveniently when the mechanic started it up it barfed dark smoke out the exhaust and barely held idle. He took it for a short test drive and it ran terrible. He also confirmed all the codes, and was convinced there was a serious problem. He was able to scan the computer data and found that cylinder one had recorded about 18,000 misfires since he reset the computer a week ago, while the misfire count for the other cylinders was 100 or less. He pulled spark plug one and found it dripping with gas. Further testing showed that with the ignition on but the engine not turning, fuel injector one was getting a signal to open and close with a steady frequency of about 20 herz. He concluded that a faulty computer was directing causing a misfire by running cylinder one way too rich. He believed that the computer he installed two weeks earlier was a lemon.
He contacted Saab Parts (Orio) and discussed all his findings with the technical service assistance rep, who also concluded there was a problem with the computer. Orio warrantied the computer, and I picked that car up yesterday with the new computer installed. So far, so good.
I also learned that the replacement computers for these cars are all remanufactured by a facility in Sweden. When cores are returned, they need to be sent back with paperwork describing the fault codes, car VINs, and software versions for the car it came out of. This info helps the rebuild technician in the repair and refurbishment of the computer module.
Maybe my experience will help someone else, but I hope that no-one else has to go through this experience.
