Well, the replacement job for a rear half shalf is not for the faint hearted, but it's doable by DIYers like myself. The most amazing part was that ALL the bolts undid themselves without any drama, even the bolts for the trailing arm that were never removed since 10 years. You gotta thank Saab for using those high quality bolts, where the shank and threads are still gray protected by a coating that seems to last forever.
It took us 4 hours overall, including spending 1/2 hour to clean the threads of the rebuilt half shalf because some grease monkey hammered it out of the hub...
The dead shaft was destroyed at the outer joint. The cage was split in 2 parts, the balls were gone but there was still some grease in there, and no trace of major corrosion. The outer shell of that joint is badly rusted, so my guess is that some contamination found a way in by slipping under the boot. The inner joint, with that torn boot, is still fine!
Funny fact : the rear suspension is a real showcase of metallurgy : stamped steel trailing arm, forged steel upper arm, stamped aluminium lower arm, forged aluminium toe link, cast aluminium upper shock mount and cast iron knuckle!
You gotta love the engineering behind this car, and the fact that the swedes know a thing or two about corrosion and winter...
