P0300 - Random Multiple Misfires Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 26 Dec 2019 12:04:52 In Reply to: Dang! I traded texts with Bernie while in Pittsburgh, paid close attention to how the car ran, monitored fuel mileage on the ~25 miles of I-79 that we travel enroute to home, before deciding that everything was pretty much OK (other than the CEL being illuminated) and exited onto I-76 heading the remaining 250 miles home rather than going an additional 10 miles North to Bernie's Shop.
Why multiple random mis-fires?
All four coils are SAAB-Mitsubishi units with only ~30K miles of use. The plugs are the appropriate NGK model with identical age to the coils. Fuel mileage was 33+ MPG on I-79 at higher than posted speeds before making my decision to continue toward home. The car never stumbled during the start-up Tuesday evening which resulted in the CEL illuminating. I did fill-up with Sunoco Ultra93 at an Ohio Turnpike Service Area on the drive out, and the fuel smelled different. Fuel chemistry? Weak fuel pump?
I will need to keep an eye on this and watch for the ECM code that others have reported.
I had the fuel level sensor replaced in May 2016, IIRC. I will need to check with K&N to see if the work included a fuel pump too, I don't think it did. I had them replace the fuel level sensor in my 9-5 at about the same time and I insisted that car receive a new pump due to its higher accumulated miles. So maybe it is time for a new fuel pump.
I saw an old posting from John Myers which mentioned a leaking brake booster vacuum line can cause this Code, and said a hissing noise is a symptom. Both my wife and I have noticed a hissing sound at start-up, and we both assumed it was coming form the heating system due to location of the sound.
