2006 9-3SC with ~110K miles
Tasks to be completed:
- Replace Alternator
- Replace Serpentine Belt and Idler
- Replace front seal
- Replace 6CD changer with a warrantied one I obtained from Gold Wing as my wife's Christmas Gift.
We have been hearing a brief odd sound at nearly every start-up all winter. We thought it might be just coolant circulating into the heating coil as the noise was coming from the front of the car and stopped quickly. Last week the noise did not almost immediately cease, so I was able to raise the hood and prowl around the front of the car seeking the noise source. It seemed to clearly be coming from the alternator area.
A new SAAB alternator was quoted as only $100 more than a rebuilt Bosch and I too have experienced extremely short life of Bosh Rebuilt alternators. My unpleasant experience was back in 2004 with a Chevy Astro Van.
This will be the second replacement of the belt, and either the first or second replacement of the idler.
The Service Writer recommended replacing the Front Seal while in there. No evidence of leaking but there must be a reason for the comment.
I purchased a replacement 6CD changer for my wife for Christmas and failed at my attempts to extract the old one and install the new one, so it is on the list too.
What is life expectancy of alternators for others? I can't complain about almost 15 years of life and over 100K miles, but I don't remember seeing many posts about this.
