We had a 2001 9.3 and I don't remember it automatically resetting. Maybe I just reset it as I was filling the oil and never waited to see if it happened automatically.
Same with our 2009 and 2010 - I always reset it when changing the oil, never waited for it to automatically reset. The oil-life monitor doesn't actually measure anything about the oil; it just keeps kind of a digital diary of starts, stops, hours, total revolutions, hot, cold, all kinds of stuff like that. If you filled the crankcase with antifreeze instead of oil it would still happily calculate that stuff as if it was filled with oil.
