Replacing Sway Bar Links? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 28 Jul 2021 08:20:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I got 45% of the way through this job and was stymied, so everything is back to 'as was' condition.
Use of a 17mm Cone Wrench (Park brand - important!), 18mm sockets, and copious amounts of PB Blast allowed me to loosen the nuts on the existing link.
The problem being that both link bolts acquired a steeply downward angle as the nuts were being loosened. Meaning either the Coil spring is pushing downward, the sway bar is pushing upward, or both. Regardless, I knew/feared that if I continued I would not be able to insert the new link.
I placed wooden timbers beneath the ball joint and lowered the jack supporting the car thinking it might relieve the coil spring downward pressure. No apparent improvement.
What is the secret to doing this job with only one floor jack?
I now wonder if maybe I was on the right track with my timbers and lowering. That the upper bolt must be removed first and the lower bolt installed first.
Thanks for any experiences you can share. At least the nuts are now nice and free for the second attempt!
