Low coolant warning

So I got the Low Level ,Refill warning for coolant . Was on a short errand , finished it and had no warning going back home, thinking the coolant probably expanded a bit? I let it cool down in the garage and the level is almost an inch below the seam in expansion tank. Tried another short trip with same results.
I read through in the search and it leads me to try the new cap on exp tank idea. Saw comments to stick with OEM but none available on the eE sponsor site. Should I risk a different one anyway? Any luck anybody? My car is 09’ SS 2.0t.
I don’t see any drips on the floor. I see some dried residue on the overfill tip on the back left of the tank. Not sure how old that residue is.
Any risk of harm driving with just a little below line on tank? Also does it matter what brand is used to top the line off?
Lots of stupid questions there. Thanks!
