Hello,
Not a fun job. Just replaced a pan on a convertible that a tow truck damaged the pan on. I loosed and the trans and slid it back a few mm. I did not touch the timing cover.
As far as the rtv deal, it works better on the 4 cylinder. Seems to be more room there. The most important part is to drain the oil and let it drain for a day and try to clean all oil out of the sensor piece and the the contact area's on the pan. Also after doing the rtv I usually spray some permatex spray sealant on it it too. It buys you some time.
As Anders said the o-ring can be replaced but if you loose the end your taking off in the pan, its coming off. I too have warned people and tried it a few times. Good Luck, Bernie
