Odd odor in the engine compartment Posted by juanm [Email] (#201) [Profile/Gallery] (more from juanm) on Sat, 22 Jul 2023 08:10:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi
recently I was driving in my 2006 Saab Convertible 9-3 ARC and we noticed an unusual odor (sort of like electrical or rubber burning but still a bit different). I stopped on the side of the road. and then notice a small stream of steam/smoke? coming from under the hood. I opened the hood. I steam/smoke quickly dissipated so I could determine where it came from. The odor was very mild (but still like - but not exactly like - a rubber/electrical burning. I checked around the engine. Nothing. I noticed that the black power steering reservoir appears to be wet on the outside. I cleaned it with a rag and smelled it but it wasn't the smell we noticed.
The next week I brought it to my Saab mechanic. He took it for a ride. He said he could smell "something" but nothing familiar. He couldn't trace it to anything in the engine compartment or the interior. So we did nothing.
I have noticed it again but not all the time.
I see that the power steering reservoir seems to be a little wet at times. Could it be power steering fluid dripping on the engine and then evaporating??
I stopped in at a O'Reilly auto parts store and mentioned it to them. A guy asked if he could check under my hood. He didn't find anything but guessed that perhaps it is a belt that is loose and is generating the smell. The belts seem fine.
Any thoughts of similar experiences? Thank you.
