Hello,
As stated above I also really like the ride of my 05 convertible. The ecm is an issue. I would get the heat shield and install it as soon as you get the car. It does appear that there is finally a place that can repair them and I believe that is were Saab/Orio/Hedin is getting them rebuilt. As far as the heat shield get one of the ones that provide a mounting plate that is raised with rubber insulators. In general the 9-3 ss had lots of issues when new but they have actually aged better than most other Saab's. If it is an automatic the the early failures were due to radiator's leaking coolant internally into the trans cooler and contaminating the fluid. So that should have been taken care of years ago by now. As a general rule if the car has regular oil changes the timing chains should be changed out at around 200k if someone was bad with oil changes it will need done around 150k. The subframes do rust out in the salt area's in part due to the ac evaportor draining water onto the subframe by the exhaust. The power steering pumps are cam driven and the radial seal there fails allowing engine oil to enter the power steering system. For some reason the engine oil doesn't seem to ruin anything. You have to check the forums to find a replacement radial seal. Saab never sold one.
As far as the top you really need a Tech 2 diagnosis to see what it is. If it is a hydraulic leak you should be able to find it without a tech 2 but often I find the hall effect sensors on the hinges for the tonneau cover get knocked loose during other repairs often. But a Tech 2 will really tell you were to check. Without a tech 2 I would say check the fluid resevoir for the pump and see if it full. If it is not search for a leak. The pump and resevoir are located in the passenger rear side in the truck under the luggage compartment carpeting. The lines running to the front latch run up the passenger side of the convertible top frame. Sometimes those hoses get pinched. The most likely top cylinders to leak are the front latch cylinder. If you pull the plug in the front cover that allows access to the emergency release for the front latch fluid will leak out when you remove the plug if that is were the leak is. I believe it is the cylinder for the tonneau cover that usually leak in the rear. I use Cabriolet Hydraulics in Sarasota Fla for both cylinder rebuilding and replacement hoses. Good Luck, Bernie
